The Bernina Railway in 2024

This is Pontresina, near St. Moritz and from here to Tirano is truly fantastic railway.

In fact this is one of the finest train rides in the world.

With wonderful scenary and opening windows, one can both see and smell the landscape.

The Bernina Railway is invigorating in all seasons..........

.............and in all weathers.

Most definitely an all year round railway experience.

The summit is Ozpizio Bernina, 7,392ft.

This is the south end of the station. Hourly trains throughout the day.

We descend to Alp Grum, altitude 6,860ft.

Then wind our way down the valley side.

Heading for the railway nerve centre of Poschiavo village, altitude 3,327ft.

Brusio now and a morning train with a trailing load of logs.

Then comes the well known Brusio spiral as our steep descent continues.

We break the order now to look back at Le Prese with its long and hugely enjoyable street running section.

More street running in San Antonio.

As well as in Tirano itself.

At Tirano station an early morning arrival shunts its trailing load of logs.

And more Tirano shunting as three of the stunning Bernina open carriages are reversed into the platform.

These four wheelers are the only way to travel.
One sees, smells and fully appreciates absolutely everything!
This is Miralago

And this is Le Prese once more.

You have to pick both fine weather and the correct train for this railway experience.
To do so delivers an Alpine journey that is "out of this world".
