At Ledbury Railway Station we thought about the Internet early and by using a cheque based routine as the Internet World awaited secure credit card technology we were ahead
and by going live on 16th May 1996 we became, we believe, the first website in the world to sell rail tickets over the Internet.
The importance of website names was also apparent in those early days and with UK domain names at that time free, we were in a position to register whatever we wanted.
We chose railticket.co.uk and were delighted when British Rail came alongside with rail.co.uk, their first website, a few weeks later.
The importance of the Internet to the Rail Industry has since become enormous and it is amazing that Ledbury Railway Station was involved with the very start of this retailing revolution.
